How a reclusive Sufi healer became the most influential figure behind Pakistan's political throne
In short: Bushra Bibi transformed from a private spiritual mentor into a central political force. Once known for her reclusive life as a Sufi scholar, she became the first spouse of a Pakistani prime minister to wear a niqab, eventually wielding significant influence over state appointments and major political decisions.
Born in the early 1970s into a landowning family in Punjab, Bushra Bibi initially lived a conventional life, managing households in Lahore and Pakpattan after her 1989 marriage to Khawar Maneka. Her path shifted as she deepened her commitment to Sufi Islam, eventually gaining recognition as a pir, or spiritual guide. Her reputation for mysticism and her role in leading pilgrimages to the shrine of the 12th-century saint Baba Farid drew the attention of Imran Khan, who frequently visited the site to seek her counsel during difficult moments.
Following her 2018 marriage to Khan, Bibi’s influence moved from the spiritual to the political. Aides reported that she provided guidance on state matters, sometimes listening to high-level meetings from behind a screen. Her involvement extended to administrative decisions, with reports suggesting she influenced ministerial appointments and even the timing of official travel based on spiritual interpretations. This transition from a private, introverted life to a public political actor culminated in her leading protests in November 2024, where she directly challenged government security barricades in Islamabad.
Her political journey has been marked by intense legal and personal turmoil. Since 2024, she has faced multiple convictions, including sentences related to the legality of her marriage and the Al-Qadir Trust case, which involved allegations of misappropriating funds. While she has experienced periods of release, her imprisonment has been characterized by allegations of poisoning, isolation, and the denial of basic rights. Khan has consistently claimed that her treatment is a calculated effort by the military establishment to exert emotional pressure on him, framing her legal battles as part of a broader campaign of political victimization against their party.
