How a Wisconsin taxi driver became the architect of 1990s alternative rock
In short: Before he was the 'Nevermind Man,' Butch Vig was driving a cab in Madison by day and playing drums by night. His journey from a piano student to a Grammy-winning producer reveals how a fascination with sound manipulation shaped the most iconic albums of a generation.
Born in Viroqua, Wisconsin, in 1955, Butch Vig’s musical path began with six years of piano study. However, a transformative performance by The Who prompted him to trade the keys for a $60 drum kit. After studying film direction at the University of Wisconsin, Vig moved to Madison, where he began a period of intense musical experimentation.
In the 1980s, Vig’s career was a 'trial by fire.' While performing with the band Spooner, he helped establish Smart Studios in Madison alongside Steve Marker. During this era, Vig balanced the rigors of professional life, working as a taxi driver during the day to support his musical pursuits. This period of self-production and running the Boat Records label laid the technical foundation for his later success.
Vig’s breakthrough came in 1991, producing Nirvana’s diamond-selling 'Nevermind' and the Smashing Pumpkins' 'Gish.' He famously utilized techniques like vocal double-tracking—a method he used to persuade Kurt Cobain, even citing John Lennon as a precedent. While some, including Cobain, occasionally critiqued the 'slickness' of these polished sounds, the impact was undeniable.
Beyond his work with grunge icons, Vig’s versatility spans genres. He has produced for Green Day, Sonic Youth, and the Foo Fighters, and co-founded the band Garbage, which has sold over 17 million records. From composing film soundtracks to forming alt-country and indie projects, Vig remains a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern studio production.
