In short: The Cape Floristic Region is the smallest of Earth's six floral kingdoms, yet it packs a punch. Covering less than 0.5 percent of Africa, it sustains nearly 20 percent of the continent's plant species. This biodiversity hotspot is a masterclass in evolution, resilience, and the delicate balance of fire-dependent ecosystems.

Located at the southern tip of South Africa, the Cape Floristic Region is a unique phytogeographic unit. While most floral kingdoms span vast continents, this region is remarkably compact, occupying just 78,555 square kilometers. Despite its size, it is home to over 9,000 vascular plant species, with an extraordinary 69 percent found nowhere else on Earth. This high level of endemism is largely driven by the fynbos biome, a fire-prone, sclerophyllous shrubland that thrives on nutrient-poor, acidic soils.

The region’s survival is inextricably linked to natural disturbances. Fynbos plants have evolved complex adaptations to fire, which is essential for seed germination and the suppression of invasive species. Beyond fire, the ecosystem relies on intricate biological processes, including specialized pollination by insects, birds, and mammals, as well as unique seed dispersal mechanisms involving ants and termites. These ongoing evolutionary processes are why the area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Today, the region faces significant threats from habitat loss, land degradation, and the spread of invasive alien trees like pine and eucalyptus. These non-native species not only crowd out endemic flora but also consume significantly more water, posing a direct threat to the regional water supply of nearby Cape Town. Conservation efforts are now focused on managing these invasive threats and utilizing satellite-based research, such as the BioSCape campaign, to better understand and protect this fragile, fire-dependent landscape.
