In short: Known as the Patriarch of Lighthouses, Cordouan is the oldest lighthouse in France. Rising from the Gironde estuary, this Renaissance marvel blends architectural grandeur with centuries of maritime innovation. It remains the last inhabited lighthouse in the country, serving as both a vital navigational aid and a protected historic monument.

Construction of the current Tour de Cordouan began in 1584 and concluded in 1611. Designed by the architect Louis de Foix, the structure was built to protect the Bordeaux wine trade, replacing an earlier, dilapidated tower established by Edward, the Black Prince. De Foix envisioned a Renaissance masterpiece, incorporating elements of Roman mausoleums, palaces, and cathedrals. The base was constructed from limestone blocks to withstand the sea, while the interior featured lavish decor, including gilt, statuary, and arched doorways.

The lighthouse underwent significant transformations over the centuries. Between 1782 and 1789, engineer Joseph Teulère renovated the tower, raising its height to 60 metres above the highest tides and introducing a turning lighting dish powered by a watchmaker's machine. In 1823, the site became the testing ground for the first rotating Fresnel lens system. These technological leaps were matched by structural changes, including the addition of three stories in the 18th century and a transition from burning oak chips to whale oil, petroleum gas, and eventually electricity.

Today, Cordouan is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a status granted in 2021. Its significance is underscored by its status as the last inhabited lighthouse in France. While the lighthouse was fully automated in 2006, keepers remain on-site to maintain the historic structure and guide visitors. This tradition of human presence distinguishes Cordouan from other lighthouses, ensuring that the legacy of the Patriarch continues to be preserved by members of the local association SMIDDEST.
