Why the Congo Basin is the planet's most overlooked climate powerhouse
In short: The Congo Basin is the world's second-largest rainforest, acting as a critical carbon sink and a global climate regulator. While it receives far less scientific attention than the Amazon, its vast peatlands and forests hold massive carbon reserves that are essential to stabilizing the Earth's climate system.
Spanning 3.7 million square kilometres in Central Africa, the Congo Basin is a geological depression within the ancient Congo Craton. Its landscape is defined by the Congo River and its tributaries, which drain wetlands and highlands across the region. The basin's climate is characterized by intense rainfall, averaging 1,500 to 2,000 millimetres annually, and it experiences the highest frequency of lightning strikes on the planet. These atmospheric conditions help drive global climate circulation, making the region a vital component of the Earth's carbon cycle.
The basin's ecological significance is immense, housing over 10,000 plant species and iconic wildlife like the bonobo and western lowland gorilla. Beneath the forest canopy, the Cuvette Centrale contains 145,500 square kilometres of peatlands, which store approximately 30 billion tonnes of carbon—equivalent to roughly 20 years of U.S. fossil fuel emissions. Because the forest acts as a massive carbon sink, holding about 8% of the world's forest-based carbon, its preservation is considered a potential 'tipping point' for the global climate.
Human activity in the basin is complex, with an estimated 80 million people living in and around the area. While 40 million depend directly on the woodlands for traditional livelihoods, the region faces pressures from logging and road expansion. Although deforestation rates have shown signs of slowing, the balance between economic development and environmental protection remains a central challenge. Initiatives like the Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor and various carbon-offset projects reflect ongoing efforts to secure the future of this essential, yet under-researched, climatic hotspot.
