From zero scholarship offers to an NFL Super Bowl MVP
In short: In 2012, Cooper Kupp finished high school without a single college football scholarship offer. Years later, the wide receiver would rewrite the record books, leading the NFL in receptions, yards, and touchdowns in a single season and securing a Super Bowl championship.
The ascent of Cooper Kupp is a study in statistical dominance and resilience. Born in Yakima, Washington, in 1993, Kupp’s path to professional stardom was far from guaranteed. Despite a prolific high school career at Davis High School—where he recorded 110 catches for 2,100 yards—he entered the collegiate level without any scholarship offers. It was only three weeks after his senior season concluded that he received his first opportunity, playing for the Eastern Washington Eagles.
At the FCS level, Kupp became a record-breaking phenomenon. During his time with the Eagles, he set numerous national freshman records, including 1,691 receiving yards and 93 receptions. By the end of his college career, he held the FCS records for total receptions (428), receiving yards (6,464), and receiving touchdowns (73). His 2015 season was particularly historic; he earned the Walter Payton Award and became the league's Offensive MVP, leading the Big Sky Conference in both catches and yards.
His professional career with the Los Angeles Rams saw him transition from a third-round draft pick in 2017 to a league icon. The 2021 season served as his definitive breakthrough. Kupp achieved the rare 'triple crown,' leading the entire NFL in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns—a feat not accomplished by another player since Steve Smith Sr. in 2005. This performance culminated in a Super Bowl LVI victory, where he was named the game's MVP.
Beyond the individual accolades, Kupp represents a rare athletic lineage. As the descendant of Jake and the son of Craig, he belongs to a rare group of just five families with three consecutive NFL draft picks.
