In short: Is the world entering a Second Cold War? Analysts have coined a new term for a growing coalition of authoritarian states: CRINK. This grouping of China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea is moving beyond mere cooperation toward a coordinated effort to uproot Western influence and reshape the international system.

Despite lacking official union status, the collective is bound by a mutual defiance against U.S. dominance. and the global system directed by Western powers. This phrase achieved swift global recognition following its debut at the 2023 Halifax International Security Forum, where it characterised states seeking to break down existing international structures and rules. The mechanism of this cooperation is multi-layered. Economically, the nations are creating alternative networks to circumvent Western sanctions. Russia's primary trading partner is now China, as their mutual commerce surpassed US$240 billion during 2023. Russia and Iran have also agreed to trade in national currencies to reduce dependency on the U.S. dollar. Militarily, the ties are deepening: Iran provided roughly 3,700 drones to Russia for use in Ukraine by April 2024, while North Korea supplied approximately 2.5 million ammunition rounds and ballistic missiles. China has also exported over US$300 million in dual-use items, such as microchips and sensors, to sustain Russia's war effort. The significance of CRINK lies in its ability to erode Western advantages. By coordinating diplomatic messaging and military drills, these states aim for a multipolar world order. Analysts warn that this shift could lead to greater global instability, potentially enabling opportunistic aggression—such as Russia attacking Europe while the U.S. is distracted by China—and intensifying conflicts in regions like Taiwan, Korea, and the Middle East.
