The first female group to top Billboard twice in a row
In short: In the mid-2000s, Danity Kane didn't just break into the pop scene; they conquered it with unprecedented speed. By debuting their first two studio albums at number one on the Billboard 200 charts, they secured a historic milestone for female groups before internal friction and reality TV drama tore them apart.
Formed in 2005 through the third iteration of MTV's 'Making the Band,' Danity Kane was assembled by producer Sean Combs. Bad Boy Records held the contract for this collective, which included Aundrea Fimbres, Dawn Richard, Shannon Bex, D. Woods and Aubrey O'Day. A record-breaking milestone was reached by the ensemble when they entered Billboard's peak positions with their initial pair of studio releases. Their debut self-titled album arrived in August 2006, selling over 90,000 copies on its first day and achieving a platinum certification by November of that same year. The group's success was bolstered by the lead single "Show Stopper," which peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
No other female act had previously secured top chart spots for two consecutive debut albums in the history of Billboard. Their second album, 'Welcome to the Dollhouse,' debuted at number one in March 2008 with first-week sales of 236,000 copies. However, this commercial peak coincided with intense internal instability. The group's name was actually inspired by a female anime superhero created and drawn by Dawn Richard.
The friction reached a breaking point during the fourth season of 'Making the Band.' In October 2008, Sean Combs officially removed O'Day and Woods from the group, citing O'Day's changing image and Woods's unhappiness. This led to a series of fragmented reunions and disbandments between 2013 and 2025. Despite these fractures, the group's legacy remains tied to their rapid ascent as one of the most commercially dominant girl groups of the era.
The band's trajectory was marked by high-profile commercial ventures beyond music, including a line of denim jeans through Dollhouse, a PETA ad campaign, and plans for a fragrance and makeup line. They also attempted to expand into literature with a comic book based on the anime superhero that inspired their name.
