Why this Dutch football club is defined by its constant, resilient return to form
In short: De Graafschap, a professional club from Doetinchem, is famous for a unique sporting identity: the ability to bounce back. Their motto, Wi-j komt altied weer terug, captures a history of constant movement between the Dutch football leagues, proving that resilience is just as vital as winning the championship.
Founded on 1 February 1954, De Graafschap emerged during a pivotal moment for Dutch football. Following a high-profile benefit match after the 1953 North Sea flood, the Royal Dutch Football Association initially resisted professionalisation. This led to the creation of the wild federation, the NBVB, which established De Graafschap in the Oost-Gelderland region. Today, the club remains the only original NBVB team that continues to operate as an independent professional entity.
The club's history is defined by a rhythmic cycle of promotion and relegation. Since their first promotion playoff victory in the 1972–73 season, the team has experienced nine relegations and an equal number of promotions. This pattern has become their hallmark, leading fans—affectionately known as Superboeren, or Super Farmers—to embrace a dialect motto that translates to We always come back. This resilience has seen them through various eras, including an undefeated Eerste Divisie title in 1991 and their longest unbroken top-flight tenure between 1995 and 2003.
Despite never winning a major trophy, the club maintains a dedicated following at their home ground, De Vijverberg. Their journey has been marked by dramatic moments, such as the 2004 last-minute goal against Excelsior that secured promotion, and the 2016 final-day draw against Ajax that famously denied the giants a championship title. While the club has faced heartbreak, such as the 2020 season voided by the COVID-19 pandemic, they remain a fixture of the Dutch league system, consistently fighting to return to the Eredivisie.
