Why this Dutch fishing village football club is known as the back-and-forth club
In short: FC Volendam has earned a unique reputation in Dutch football, famously dubbed the heen-en-weer club. With a record-breaking eleven promotions to the Eredivisie, the team spends its history oscillating between the top tier and the second division, celebrated by the local fishing community with a traditional boat parade.
Founded as Victoria in 1920 by local fishermen, the club evolved into a professional entity known as FC Volendam by 1977. Based in the 6,984-capacity Kras Stadion since 1975, the team has become synonymous with its nickname, the back-and-forth club, reflecting its frequent movement between the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie. This cycle is so ingrained in the club's identity that players are traditionally honored on a fishing boat called the Heen en Weer following each promotion.
The club's professional journey began in 1955 through the issuance of bonds, leading to their first promotion to the top tier in the 1959–60 season. While they have struggled to maintain long-term stability at the highest level, they have achieved notable successes, including reaching the KNVB Cup finals in 1957–58 and 1994–95. Their best league performance occurred in the 1989–90 season, when they finished sixth, a feat they repeated three seasons later.
Throughout its history, the club has navigated significant challenges, including financial instability in the 1980s and the integration of professional standards following the 1940 merger of the Catholic Football Association into the Royal Dutch Football Association. Despite these hurdles, the club has consistently produced talent and maintained a dedicated following. Their most recent promotion in 2025 marked the eleventh time they have ascended to the top division, reinforcing their status as a resilient, if nomadic, fixture in Dutch football.
