In short: Before he was a household name, Don Muraco had to navigate the treacherous waters of professional wrestling. From being mocked as a "beach bum" to becoming a fan favorite, his career was defined by high-stakes feuds, bloody cage matches, and a dramatic transformation in the spotlight.

Born in Oahu, Hawaii, in 1949, Don Muraco began his career as an amateur wrestling champion for Punahou School. Despite his athletic pedigree, he chose the professional circuit over football. He spent years learning the craft across various territories, including the NWA and the AWA. It was in the San Francisco territory where he first learned the nuances of "working as a heel," a character archetype designed to elicit heat from the audience.

Muraco's rise to stardom was marked by physical resemblance to NWA World Champion Jack Brisco. In 1974, he gained significant notoriety by reversing Brisco's signature figure four leglock. However, his most iconic era began in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) from 1981 to 1988. During this period, he portrayed an arrogant villain who famously ate a submarine sandwich in the ring while dominating opponents. He was frequently subjected to derisive "beach bum" chants due to his Native Hawaiian heritage.

His career was a masterclass in narrative shifts. After a bloody feud with Bob Backlund and a high-profile cage match against Jimmy Snuka at Madison Square Garden, Muraco eventually underwent a "face turn." In 1987, he saved Billy Graham from a beating, adopted a tie-dye wardrobe, and rebranded himself as "The Rock." This transition allowed him to headline major events like the first Survivor Series and the first Royal Rumble, where he tied for the second-most eliminations in the tournament.

Following his WWF tenure, Muraco became a nomadic champion. He captured the North American Heavyweight title in Stampede Wrestling in 1988 and later held the ECW Heavyweight Championship in 1992 and 1993. His career spanned multiple continents, including notable runs in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, solidifying his status as a versatile veteran of the industry.
