How a regional Queensland club became a national NRL powerhouse in just four years
In short: In 2023, the Dolphins entered the National Rugby League as a spin-off of a local Queensland Cup side. By 2026, they had shattered records, qualified for their first finals series, and established themselves as a formidable force in Australian rugby league, all while carefully navigating their regional identity.
The Dolphins were born from a 2020 bid by the Redcliffe Dolphins, a Queensland Cup club seeking to join the national competition. In October 2021, they secured the 17th NRL licence, beating out two other consortiums. While the NRL team is a fully professional spin-off, it maintains deep ties to its Redcliffe roots, which the club CEO Terry Reader describes as their spiritual home. To ensure national appeal, the club opted for the name 'Dolphins' rather than a specific geographic identifier, aiming to represent the northern corridor of Brisbane, the Moreton Bay Region, and the Sunshine Coast.
The team's rise has been marked by rapid success and tactical innovation. Under inaugural head coach Wayne Bennett, the Dolphins won their first three matches in 2023. Their debut was a poignant tribute to rugby league Immortal Arthur Beetson, defeating the Sydney Roosters 28–18. The club quickly proved its mettle, equalizing the greatest comeback in premiership history in April 2023 by overcoming a 26–0 deficit against the Gold Coast Titans. By 2025, they had recorded wins against every other team in the competition, and in 2026, they finished third on the ladder to reach their first finals series.
Individual excellence has fueled this trajectory. Winger Jamayne Isaako became a standout, recording the most tries and points in the 2023 season—a feat not seen since 1990—and later breaking a 1981 record for the fewest games required to reach 1,000 club points. The club has also fostered strategic pathways, including a partnership with the PNG Hunters to integrate Papua New Guinean talent into the NRL system. Despite missing the finals in 2025, the team scored 721 points, the highest total for any non-finals team in NRL history, cementing their reputation as a high-scoring, competitive entity in the modern game.
