From diplomat to dark tourist: the life of Dom Joly

In short: Before he became a household name for hidden camera pranks, Dom Joly was a career diplomat based in Prague. His transition from high-level international relations to exploring the world's most tragic sites and conspiracy theories offers a unique look at the intersection of global politics and public spectacle.

Dom Joly’s upbringing was defined by a complex international background. Born in Beirut in 1967 to British parents, he grew up in Lebanon with his parents largely detached from his daily life. He attended Brummana High School before moving to England for education at Dragon School and Haileybury College. After pursuing studies in politics at London's School of Oriental and African Studies, he entered a diplomatic role based within Prague.

Joly’s public persona shifted dramatically with the success of Trigger Happy TV from 2000 to 2003. The show was broadcast in over 70 countries and secured him a rumored £5 million deal with the BBC. Despite this mainstream success, Joly maintained a sharp intellectual edge through his work as a columnist for The Independent until 2016. During this time, he authored a notable spoof column under the persona of Cooper Brown, an American showbiz type, while also serving as a special correspondent for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

In recent years, Joly has pivoted toward 'dark tourism' and investigative travel. His book The Dark Tourist (2010) saw him visiting sites of great tragedy, such as Chernobyl on May 4, 2009, and the Killing Fields of Cambodia. He further explored these boundaries in his 2023 book, The Conspiracy Tourist, where he investigated UFO sightings at Roswell and the influence of QAnon. This evolution from a diplomatic career to exploring the fringes of human belief and tragedy highlights a consistent interest in how people perceive global reality.
