In short: Edappadi K. Palaniswami, a former farmer from Salem district, navigated decades of Tamil Nadu's volatile political landscape to become Chief Minister. From his early days as a party volunteer to his current role as general secretary of the AIADMK, his career reflects the complex, alliance-driven nature of Indian regional politics.

Born in 1954 in the Madras State, Edappadi K. Palaniswami initially focused on agriculture before entering electoral politics in 1974. He joined the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) as a volunteer, eventually rising through local leadership roles. His electoral path was not linear; after his first defeat in 1986, he secured his first legislative assembly seat in 1989. Over the following decades, he held various positions, including Member of Parliament and state cabinet minister, serving under the leadership of Jayalalithaa.

Palaniswami’s ascent to the chief ministership occurred during a period of significant party upheaval. Following the death of Jayalalithaa in December 2016, the AIADMK faced internal power struggles. After O. Panneerselvam resigned in February 2017 and the party's chosen candidate, V.K. Sasikala, was convicted in a disproportionate assets case by the Supreme Court, the party elected Palaniswami as its legislative leader. He was sworn in as Chief Minister on 16 February 2017, leading a 32-member cabinet.

His tenure as Chief Minister, which lasted until 2021, included notable policy initiatives such as the Kudimaramaththu scheme for restoring irrigation infrastructure and reforms to the state school education system to align with national standards. Since March 2023, he has served as the general secretary of the AIADMK. His career illustrates the intense polarization between the AIADMK and its rival, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a dynamic that has defined Tamil Nadu politics since the AIADMK was founded by M.G. Ramachandran in 1972.

The AIADMK itself maintains a unique position in Indian politics, often prioritizing the interests of the Tamil population over rigid ideological frameworks. Its history is marked by frequent shifts in alliances with national parties, including the Congress Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Palaniswami’s trajectory from a local branch secretary to the head of this influential regional force highlights the endurance required to survive and lead within the state's highly competitive and often unpredictable political environment.
