In short: Located thirty kilometers from Taza, the Friouato Caves descend over two hundred meters into the Moroccan earth. This vast network of tunnels and chambers is home to rare species and rumors of explorers who never returned. Since 2016, the site has remained closed to the public for safety reasons.

The Friouato Caves, also known as the Gouffre de Friouato, represent a complex subterranean environment characterized by a series of chambers, natural bridges, and narrow passages. Stretching over 2,178 meters in length and reaching a depth of approximately 271 meters, the system is adorned with extensive stalactite and stalagmite formations. At its lower reaches, the environment remains remarkably stable, maintaining a constant temperature between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius. This high-humidity climate creates a unique micro-ecosystem that supports rare flora and fauna, which have adapted to the darkness and condensation found on the cave walls.

Exploration of the site has been a long-standing endeavor, though it is shrouded in local lore. Residents of the nearby village recount stories of past visitors who ventured into the depths and failed to return. Scientific interest peaked in 1969, when an expedition by the Exeter University Speleological Society successfully navigated two static sumps to uncover additional chambers and shafts. This group eventually reached a massive boulder choke, which researchers suspect may connect to the upstream passages of the nearby Grotte du Chiker. Later, in 1976, the Cerberus Speleological Society conducted further documentation, capturing images of both systems to better understand their potential link.

Despite its allure, the cave presents significant physical challenges. The youngest individual recorded to have explored the site is Oumaima Ouballa, who navigated the depths at age eight around 2010. However, the inherent risks of the terrain have led to strict management. Since the spring of 2016, the caves have been officially closed to all visitors. This decision was made primarily due to safety concerns, effectively sealing off the subterranean river system—which is believed to flow toward the Grottes of Chiker—from the public eye until further notice.
