In short: In a state defined by its diverse geography, Gadsden County stands as a demographic outlier. It is the only county in Florida where Black residents form the majority, rooted in a history that stretches back to the 1820s and the legacy of the tobacco crop.

Created in 1823 and named for James Gadsden, the county is situated in Florida's panhandle. It is historically recognized for its tobacco crop, a primary agricultural pursuit that has since become obsolete. Today, the county serves as a distinct cultural and political hub within the broader Black Belt region of the Deep South.

Demographically, Gadsden County is unique. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 43,826, with 53.5% of residents identifying as Black or African American. This majority status makes it a singular entity in the state. The population is predominantly rural, with 80.5% of residents living outside of urban areas, resulting in a population density of about 84.9 people per square mile.

The county's political identity is as striking as its demographics. It is the strongest Democratic county in Florida, maintaining a massive majority of registered Democrats as of May 2022. Since 1992, every Democratic runner for president or governor has secured at least 60% of the local ballots. Gadsden stayed a Democratic bastion despite statewide losses, uniquely being the sole Florida county to reject Ronald Reagan in 1984 and George H.W. Bush. Bush in 1988.

Geographically, the county is bisected by I-10, which serves as the unofficial dividing line between its northern and southern sections. While it contains 12 square miles of water—representing about 2.3% of its total land area—its identity is defined more by its inland history, its railroad networks, and its enduring role as a cornerstone of the Deep South's cultural landscape.
