In short: In a small coastal town on San Juan Island, a man named Osamu Shimomura harvested jellyfish from the docks. His work there eventually led to one of the most significant breakthroughs in modern molecular biology: the isolation of a protein that allows scientists to see life's inner workings.

While Friday Harbor is known today as a hub for tourism and retirement, its scientific legacy is anchored by a profound discovery. Osamu Shimomura harvested jellyfish from the local docks and successfully purified the proteins responsible for their green fluorescence. This specific protein—green fluorescent protein (GFP)—revolutionized science by providing a way to mark molecular activity in living cells, making it a staple tool in modern research. This discovery was facilitated by the town's role as a marine biology hub. The site currently hosts Friday Harbor Laboratories, a world-famous field station for the University of Washington.

The town's identity is also rooted in its unique geography and history. Positioned along San Juan Island's eastern edge overlooking the San Juan Channel, this area remains shielded from rain by both the Olympic Mountains and Vancouver Island Ranges. This positioning contributes to a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm dry summers and damp chilly winters. The name itself pays homage to Joseph Poalie Friday, a native Hawaiian who moved north from Fort Cowlitz to herd sheep around the harbor. The local area is situated on the east side of San Juan Island. It covers roughly 2.16 square miles in total size.

The town serves as the commercial heart of the San Juan Islands archipelago and remains the only incorporated town in the group. Its history is marked by shifts in industry: from 19th-century salmon curing and sheep farming to a mid-20th-century decline caused by the Great Depression and competition from Eastern Washington growers. Moving into tourism and property since the 1970s, the town still accommodates premier entities such as a University of Washington field station called Friday Harbor Laboratories. The community was officially incorporated on February 10, 1909. It serves as the county seat for San Juan County.
