In short: Located just 25 kilometers from Dhaka, Gazipur serves as the primary hub for the nation's massive textile industry, hosting three-quarters of all garment factories. While this industrial growth has fueled rapid urbanization and population expansion, it has also created an environmental crisis that significantly impacts the health of its residents.

Gazipur has transformed into a critical urban center within the Dhaka Division. Formally established as the Gazipur City Corporation in 2013 through the merger of Gazipur and Tongi municipalities alongside several rural areas, it now spans 329.53 square kilometers. It is currently the largest city corporation in Bangladesh by size and the third most-populous, with a 2022 census population of 2,677,715 residents living across 836,875 households. This represents a significant increase from the 1,626,077 people recorded in the 2011 census.

The city's economic identity is inseparable from its industrial output. As the heart of the Bangladeshi garment sector, the city supports a dense network of manufacturing facilities. This rapid industrialization, however, has come with severe consequences for local air quality. In 2020, the annual average PM2.5 concentration reached 94.6 micrograms per cubic meter. This figure is nearly 19 times the World Health Organization's guideline of 5 micrograms per cubic meter, which was established in September 2021. Experts estimate that this extreme pollution level reduces the average life expectancy of a Gazipur resident by 8.8 years.

Beyond its industrial profile, Gazipur functions as a significant administrative and educational node. It is home to the Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology and houses the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College, the city's only public medical institution, alongside dozens of private clinics. Governance is managed by the city corporation, which oversees 57 wards and 131 mahallas. Despite the challenges posed by environmental degradation, the city continues to see improvements in social indicators, with literacy rates rising from 67.39% in 2011 to 83.57% by 2022, reflecting the complex, evolving nature of this major industrial hub.
