The Egyptian province that once declared its own independence
In short: In 1919, during the struggle against British rule, the residents of Zefta did something extraordinary: they established a self-governing republic. This spirit of resistance defines Gharbia, a region where ancient Pharaonic legacies meet a modern powerhouse of Egyptian industry and agriculture.
The history of Gharbia is a tapestry of shifting borders and defiant moments. During the 1919 Revolution, the 'Republic of Zefta' emerged, featuring a local governing council with dedicated committees for security, hygiene, and media, and even its own daily newspaper, Al-Jumhur. This revolutionary energy is mirrored in the region's national identity, which commemorates the 1798 resistance against Napoleon’s French forces in Tanta.
The territory's roots reach deep into the Pharaonic era. It once comprised several ancient administrative districts, including Sa El Hagar, which served as a medical and religious center. The region also saw the rise of powerful dynasties, such as the 24th Dynasty under Tefnakht, and the 26th Dynasty, led by King Amyrtaeus, who successfully expelled Persian occupiers.
Economically, the governorate is a vital engine for Egypt. It leads the nation in onion production and ranks second in grape yields. Beyond the fields, which cover over 735,000 feddans, the region is an industrial hub. El Mahalla El Kubra hosts the massive Misr Spinning and Weaving Company, while towns like Tanta, Samannoud, and Zefta support various textile, fertilizer, and food processing plants.
Today, the governorate is a densely populated area with an estimated 5.5 million residents as of early 2023. While its capital, Tanta, serves as a central urban hub, much of the population remains rooted in the rural landscape, maintaining the agricultural traditions that have sustained the Nile Delta for millennia.
