In short: Nestled between the Blue and White Nile rivers, Gezira State is Sudan's agricultural engine. Known for its vast irrigation networks and historic cotton production, this region has evolved from an ancient kingdom to a modern battleground. Its name, meaning island, reflects its unique geography, yet its recent history is defined by conflict.

Gezira State, covering 27,549 square kilometres in east-central Sudan, derives its name from the Arabic word for island. Positioned between the Blue Nile and the White Nile, the region has long been a hub of human activity. Ancient history reveals it was once occupied by the Kingdom of Kush and served as the southern reach of Nubia. By the early sixteenth century, following the collapse of the kingdom of Alodia, the area became the central seat of the Funj Sultanate, home to the Abdallabi tribe.

The modern identity of the region was forged in 1925 with the launch of the Gezira Scheme, a massive agricultural initiative supported by the construction of the Sennar Dam and extensive canal networks. This project transformed the landscape, bringing over 10,000 square kilometres under cultivation. While initially focused on cotton, the agricultural output shifted significantly by the 1990s, when wheat production replaced roughly one-third of the land previously dedicated to cotton. The administrative state itself was formally established on 1 July 1943, following the division of the Blue Nile state.

Today, the region faces profound instability. The ongoing war in Sudan, which escalated in 2023, has severely impacted the state. Following an offensive by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in December 2023, the region experienced a massive displacement crisis, with roughly 250,000 people fleeing in just three days. The RSF maintained control over much of the territory, including the capital, Wad Madani, until January 2025, when the Sudanese army recaptured the state. The region also suffered from widespread massacres in October 2024, marking a tragic chapter in its long history of occupation and development.
