Why is a small Florida city often called Canada's southernmost city?
In short: Hallandale Beach, Florida, is a coastal municipality with a unique cultural identity. While it sits in the heart of the Miami metropolitan area, its popularity among Canadian tourists has earned it a distinctive nickname. Beyond the tourism, this city holds a complex history of development, annexation, and tropical climate classification.
Founded by Swedish immigrant Olaf Zetterlund and Luther Halland, the son of a Florida East Coast Railroad worker, the settlement began as a modest farming community. By 1900, it consisted of only a dozen families. It was incorporated in 1927 and later reincorporated in 1947, a move that allowed the city to expand its borders by annexing land adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. In 1999, the city officially adopted the name Hallandale Beach.
The city is situated within a rare tropical monsoon climate, a classification shared by only a small region within the 48 contiguous states. This environment, combined with its proximity to the coast, has shaped its development. The city covers 4.55 square miles, with approximately 7.47% of its total area consisting of water. Its geographic location has also made it a notable point of reference for meteorologists tracking Atlantic hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Irma.
Today, Hallandale Beach is a diverse urban center with a population of over 41,000. Its cultural fabric is reflected in its demographics, which include significant populations of Russian, Haitian, Italian, Romanian, and Ukrainian ancestry. The city is also known for its financial district and entertainment venues, such as Gulfstream Park. Despite its modern urban status, it maintains a unique connection to its history, having evolved from a small trading post into a bustling hub that serves as a gateway between Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
