In short: Founded by a copper tycoon in the late 19th century, this Montana city has evolved from a railroad-linked settlement into a center for advanced scientific study. Today, it balances its historic roots with a modern, high-security laboratory infrastructure that investigates some of the world's most dangerous infectious diseases.

Hamilton serves as the county seat of Ravalli County and was established by Marcus Daly, a prominent copper magnate. Daly, who had been rebuffed in his efforts to launch business operations in nearby Grantsdale, founded the city to capitalize on the region's potential. The town was named after J.W. Hamilton, an individual who provided the essential right-of-way for the railroad, facilitating the area's growth during the late 1800s.

The city is home to the Rocky Mountain Laboratories, a government-run institution that has become a significant site for scientific inquiry. In 2008, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases finished building a Biosafety Level 4 facility at this location. This high-containment laboratory is designed to conduct research on extremely dangerous pathogens, including viruses from the Lentivirus group. This work builds upon a long history of scientific discovery in the region, including the identification of the cause of Lyme disease by scientist Willy Burgdorfer.

Beyond its scientific profile, Hamilton maintains a distinct cultural and social landscape. The city hosts the Ravalli County Museum, housed in the former county courthouse, and the expansive Daly Mansion, which features over 50 rooms and 26 acres of grounds. The community also supports local arts through the 700-seat Hamilton Performing Arts Center. Despite its small population, which reached 4,659 by the 2020 census, the city has experienced notable shifts, including the 2022 closure of a Kmart that was once the final store of its kind in the entire Mountain time zone.
