Hamburg has more bridges than any other European city
Germany's second city and a Free Hanseatic city-state counts over 1.9 million residents where the Alster and Bille meet the Elbe. Around 2,500 bridges cross its waters—Europe's densest span count—and five churches taller than 100 metres give it the world lead in that skyline niche.
Charlemagne ordered Hammaburg in AD 808 on marshy rock between Alster and Elbe; bishop Ansgar seated a see in 834. Vikings with some 600 ships burned the town of about 500 people in 845; Poles and Danes struck later, and the 1350 Black Death killed at least sixty percent. Frederick Barbarossa's 1189 charter granted Free Imperial privileges and tax-free Elbe access. The 1241 Lübeck alliance seeds the Hanseatic League; a 1266 London contract first uses hanse for the guild. Jordan von Boitzenburg's 1270 Ordeelbook wrote German municipal law; a 1410 Rezeß is read as the first constitution.
Lutheran from 1529, the city stayed sovereign after the Holy Roman Empire fell, briefly Napoleonic, then confirmed independent at Vienna in 1815. The Great Fire of 4–8 May 1842 erased about a quarter of the inner city, three churches, and the town hall, killing 51 and displacing some 20,000, with rebuilding beyond forty years. Late-nineteenth-century Atlantic trade more than quadrupled population to 800,000; Hamburg America Line under Albert Ballin became the world's largest transatlantic carrier. Accession to the Zollverein came only in 1888 with Bremen.
Today Europe's third-largest port after Rotterdam and Antwerp anchors Airbus, Beiersdorf, and publisher houses including Der Spiegel. UNESCO listed Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel in 2015. DESY and the University of Hamburg mark a science hub; Mercer placed living quality twenty-eighth in 2024. From Matthiae-Mahl—the world's oldest ceremonial meal, dated to 1356—to G20 diplomacy, the Elbe city keeps turning catastrophe into commerce.
