The world's oldest operating international airport is still expanding its wings
In short: Opened in 1911, Hamburg Airport has survived world wars, airship eras, and intense expansion debates. While many modern hubs are built on reclaimed land, this historic site has grown tenfold, evolving from a private airship hangar into a massive international gateway that can still accommodate the world's largest passenger jet.
Originally established in January 1911 by the Hamburger Luftschiffhallen GmbH, the airport began as a 45-hectare site primarily dedicated to airship operations. By 1913, the area had expanded to 60 hectares to accommodate both airships and fixed-wing aircraft. This longevity makes it the oldest international airport in the world still in operation, and the second oldest in Germany, trailing only Tempelhof Airport.
The airport's history is marked by significant shifts in both technology and geopolitics. During the First World War, its airship hangar was utilized by the German military until a fire destroyed it in 1916. Following the British occupation in 1945, the facility transitioned into its modern identity. It played a vital role in the 1948 Berlin Airlift, serving as a critical staging area for the northern air corridor.
Despite its age, the airport is a modern powerhouse, ranking as Germany's fifth-busiest commercial airport. In 2023, it handled 13,559,732 passengers and 120,315 aircraft movements. While the 1960s brought serious discussions about moving the airport to Heidmoor due to noise and capacity constraints, the plans were abandoned. Today, the site has grown to 5.7 km², featuring advanced infrastructure like the Airport Plaza and terminals designed with curved ceilings to emulate the shape of an aircraft wing. It remains capable of handling massive wide-body aircraft, such as the Airbus A380, which began serving the airport via Emirates in 2018.
