In short: Standing 7 feet 2 inches tall, Hamed Haddadi became the first Iranian to play in the NBA. His journey spans from hometown courts in Ahvaz to championship glory in China and historic milestones in Iran. Discover how this center navigated international legal hurdles and global leagues to define a generation.

Born in 1985, Hamed Haddadi emerged from the Iranian basketball scene, starting with Shahin Ahvaz before joining teams like Paykan Tehran. His professional path took a historic turn in 2008 when he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies, becoming the first Iranian to compete in the NBA. This achievement was not without friction; his entry into the league was complicated by legal restrictions on business dealings between U.S. companies and Iranian citizens. Despite these hurdles, he played for the Grizzlies until 2013, later joining the Phoenix Suns, where he famously wore number 98 as a tribute to Iran's national telephone code.

Haddadi’s influence extended far beyond North America. In China, he became a transformative figure for the Sichuan Blue Whales. During his second stint with the team, he led them to their first playoff appearance in Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) history, culminating in a 4–1 Finals series victory over the Liaoning Flying Leopards. His performance earned him the CBA Finals MVP title. He also played for the Qingdao DoubleStar Eagles and the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, consistently proving his value as a dominant international center.

On the international stage, Haddadi led Iran to multiple FIBA Asia Championship titles, earning MVP honors in four separate tournaments. His impact on Iranian sports is profound; in February 2025, the Iran Basketball Federation retired his number 15 jersey, marking the first time any athlete in the country has received such an honor. Beyond his playing career, Haddadi has sought to give back to the next generation, including hosting the first sports camp by an Iranian athlete in the United States in 2009 and establishing the Hamed Haddadi Javanan Foundation to support student-athletes.
