The deadly loophole of a 'temporary' haunted castle
In short: In 1984, a popular haunted attraction at Six Flags Great Adventure became a site of tragedy. Because the structure was built on wheels, authorities classified it as a temporary building, allowing it to bypass essential fire safety codes and lead to a catastrophic disaster.
The Haunted Castle was an unexpected success for Six Flags Great Adventure. Originally intended as a seasonal 'test' in 1978 using four aluminum semi-trailers, its popularity forced management to keep it open year-round. By 1979, the attraction was expanded into a massive 450-foot walk-through maze consisting of 17 interconnected trailers. These were linked by plywood partitions and filled with flammable materials like foam rubber, fabrics, and tar paper to create a medieval atmosphere featuring monsters, strobe lights, and eerie sounds.
The tragedy occurred on May 11, 1984, when a fire broke out at 6:35 p.m. Fanned by air conditioning, the flames spread rapidly through the flammable interior. Of the 29 people inside, eight teenagers were killed. The disaster revealed a systemic regulatory failure: because the trailers were technically on wheels, the local township classified the castle as a 'temporary structure.' This designation meant the park was not required to obtain a building permit, a certificate of occupancy, smoke detectors, or sprinklers—despite repeated warnings from safety consultants.
The legal aftermath highlighted a complex web of oversight. A state panel found the attraction in violation of a dozen fire codes, noting that the regulatory system failed at local, state, and federal levels. While Six Flags was indicted for aggravated manslaughter, the jury found them not guilty of criminal charges, though the company paid millions in civil damages. The incident remains a landmark case in the study of building codes and the dangers of 'temporary' structures in public spaces.
