How a railroad junction became the furniture capital of the world
In short: High Point, North Carolina, earned its name as the highest point on an 1856 railroad line. By the 1980s, it had transformed into the furniture capital of the world. Today, this unique city spans four counties and hosts the largest home furnishings trade show on the planet.
High Point was settled by English Quakers and German immigrants before 1750, but its true industrial rise began in the late 19th century. Positioned at the intersection of the North Carolina Railroad and the Great Western Plank Road, the city became a vital hub for shipping raw materials like cotton and lumber. When an agricultural depression in the 1890s pushed farm workers toward industrial centers, High Point provided a ready workforce for the burgeoning furniture trade.
The city's manufacturing momentum was fueled by the 1889 opening of the High Point Furniture Manufacturing Company. By 1898, the city was shipping eight freight cars of furniture daily. To overcome the logistical challenge of selling heavy, bulky items, local manufacturers launched the first North Carolina furniture exposition in 1905. This event eventually evolved into the High Point Furniture Market, which by 1921 featured a ten-story exhibition building and had surpassed Chicago as the nation's premier furniture show.
The industry faced significant shifts in the 1990s as globalization led many US companies to outsource production to Asia and Latin America. Despite this, High Point maintained its status as a global trade hub. The High Point Market remains the world's largest home furnishings event, attracting tens of thousands of attendees and contributing billions to the regional economy. Today, the city is uniquely defined by its geography, existing within four separate counties and serving as a center for logistics, education, and design.
The city's cultural landscape reflects its history, from the Museum of Old Domestic Life, housed in an 1858 Quaker meeting house, to the Bienenstock Furniture Library, the world's largest collection of design-specific volumes. While the furniture industry remains central to its identity, High Point has diversified into pharmaceuticals, banking, and photography, ensuring its continued relevance in the Piedmont Triad region.
