In short: Henderson Island, a remote World Heritage Site, is one of the last raised coral atolls with a near-pristine ecosystem. Yet, this isolated sanctuary is drowning in debris. Carried by the South Pacific Gyre, millions of plastic items wash ashore daily, turning a biological treasure into a global pollution hotspot.

Located 193 kilometres from the inhabited Pitcairn Island, Henderson is a rugged, raised coral atoll defined by steep limestone cliffs and poor soil. Despite its isolation, it was settled by Polynesians as early as 800 AD. For 600 years, these inhabitants relied on a fragile network of trade with neighbouring islands for essential resources, including stone for tools. By the 1600s, the island was abandoned, likely due to resource exhaustion and the collapse of the broader regional trade chain.

Today, the island is a vital refuge for biodiversity, hosting four endemic land bird species and ten endemic flowering plants. However, its ecological integrity faces severe modern threats. In 2017, researchers reported that Henderson beaches held the highest density of plastic rubbish globally, with an estimated 37.7 million items weighing 17.6 tonnes. This debris disrupts local life, as hermit crabs now inhabit plastic containers, and the waste potentially hinders sea turtle nesting and reduces gastropod diversity.

Human impact extends beyond pollution. Invasive species, particularly the Pacific rat introduced by early settlers, continue to challenge the island's endemic wildlife. While a 2011 eradication program failed to eliminate the rats, the island remains a focus of intense scientific study. Recent expeditions have attempted to mitigate the plastic crisis, repurposing collected waste for use on Pitcairn, yet the island remains a stark indicator of how even the most remote corners of the planet are inextricably linked to global human activity.
