In short: How does a film criticized by some as 'slapstick' and 'cringe' become a commercial juggernaut? Housefull (2010) defied critics to secure the second-highest opening weekend in Indian history, launching a multi-film saga built on high-stakes deception and a very specific brand of comedic chaos.

Released on April 30, 2010, Housefull was directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Despite facing legal action from the original producer of Kaathala Kaathala—who claimed that almost 60 percent of the footage was used without consent following its 1998 Tamil debut—the movie established a unique brand and became a hit. The film centered on Aarush, an 'extremely unlucky' man employed in Macau to bring bad luck to winning casino tables, whose journey leads him to London and eventually Italy.

The narrative is driven by a series of escalating lies: Hetal pretends her husband Bob owns three factories; the group rents a mansion under false pretenses to impress a wealthy father-in-law and an overprotective military officer; and they even present a child from an African waitress as their own. This web of deception culminates in a Royal Palace event where 'laughing gas' causes characters to inadvertently confess the truth. Despite these plot points, critics were polarized. Some reviewers labeled it a 'slap on your senses,' while others praised its ability to maintain a fast pace without 'dull moments.'

Financially, the film was a powerhouse. With a production cost of ₹30 crore (US$3.1 million), the project earned more than ₹124.50 crore (US$13 million) globally. It achieved a historic opening weekend in India of ₹410 million, which at the time was Akshay Kumar's biggest opening and the second-highest ever for any Indian film. This momentum allowed it to spawn four sequels between 2012 and 2025, cementing its place as a cornerstone of modern Bollywood comedy.
