The House of Khalifa: A Dynasty That Shaped Modern Bahrain Through Centuries of Rule
In short: Since 1783, the Al Khalifa family has maintained a grip on Bahrain, evolving from tribal leaders to a modern monarchy. Their history is defined by migration, internal feuds, and a unique governing structure that keeps the family's internal affairs strictly separated from the nation's ordinary legal system.
The Al Khalifa family traces its origins to the Anizah tribe in central Arabia. As part of the Utub alliance, they migrated through Kuwait before establishing themselves in Al Zubarah, Qatar. In 1783, Ahmed bin Muhammad bin Khalifa led the conquest of the Bahrain archipelago, displacing the Persian-backed ruler Nasr Al-Madhkur. Ahmed served as the first hakim, or ruler, until 1796, establishing a legacy that all subsequent Al Khalifa rulers share as his direct descendants.
Following Ahmed's death, the family split into two rival branches, Al-Abdulla and Al-Salman, which governed Bahrain as separate feudal estates. This division led to open conflict between 1842 and 1846, ultimately resulting in the victory of the Al-Salman branch, which secured control over the islands. By 1861, the family solidified its position by entering into a protectorate agreement with Britain, which formally recognized them as the ruling tribe of Bahrain. Despite threats from regional powers like the Ottomans and Persians, the family maintained its authority.
Today, the family operates under a centralized structure managed by the Ruling Family Council. Established in 1932 and later restructured as a formal state organ in 1973, this council arbitrates internal disputes regarding land and property, exempting family members from the jurisdiction of ordinary courts. The current head of the family, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who transitioned from Emir to King in 2002, chairs this council. The family remains deeply embedded in the state apparatus; as of 2025, roughly half of the cabinet ministers are family members, including the Prime Minister, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who is the King's son.
