In short: Spanning 340,000 hectares, this Peruvian sanctuary preserves the Cordillera Blanca, a dramatic landscape of snow-capped peaks and glacial lakes. Home to the rare Queen of the Andes plant and the Andean condor, the park serves as a vital ecological refuge while balancing ancestral land rights against modern conservation challenges.

Established by decree in 1975, Huascarán National Park encompasses the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain range on Earth. The park's elevation ranges from 2,500 meters to over 6,000 meters, featuring iconic summits like Huascarán, which stands at 6,768 meters. This rugged terrain is defined by 660 tropical glaciers—the largest such concentration in the tropics—alongside 300 glacial lakes and deep, U-shaped valleys.

The park's biodiversity is as varied as its climate, which shifts from subalpine to tundra. Researchers have identified 779 plant species, including the striking Puya raimondii, or Queen of the Andes. The fauna is equally diverse, with over 120 bird species and more than ten mammal species, including the spectacled bear, the vicuña, and the Andean mountain cat. Beyond its natural wonders, the park contains 33 archaeological sites, ranging from ancient cave paintings to pre-Columbian roads and agricultural terraces.

Management of this vast area is complex. While UNESCO designated the park a World Heritage Site in 1985 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1977, it faces ongoing pressures. Glacier retreat caused by global warming, mining operations, and hydropower projects threaten the ecosystem. Furthermore, a persistent tension exists between conservation goals and the ancestral rights of local communities who continue to graze livestock within the park's boundaries, forcing authorities to navigate a delicate balance between environmental protection and human heritage.
