How a 2019 Bollywood blockbuster navigated a massive production crisis to reach the screen
In short: Housefull 4, a high-budget fantasy comedy, faced a major mid-production upheaval when its original director was replaced following public allegations. Despite this, the film became a commercial success, grossing nearly 300 crore worldwide and spanning a narrative that connects the year 1419 to the modern day.
The production of Housefull 4 was marked by significant turbulence. Originally slated to be directed by Sajid Khan, the project underwent a major leadership change in October 2018. Amidst the Me Too movement in India, Khan faced accusations of sexual misconduct from multiple women, including Saloni Chopra and Rachel White. Following these reports, lead actor Akshay Kumar suspended his involvement, and Khan stepped down. Farhad Samji, who had co-directed the third installment of the series, took over the directorial duties to complete the film.
The narrative itself is a complex, reincarnation-themed comedy that bridges two distinct eras: 1419 and 2019. The plot follows three brothers living in London who, through a series of chaotic events and visions, discover they are reincarnations of figures from the 15th-century kingdom of Madhavgarh. The film utilizes extensive visual effects to depict these past lives, with post-production lasting eight months to integrate the computer-generated imagery. The production team, led by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, constructed elaborate sets, including a massive environment at the Chitrakoot grounds in Andheri, to bring the historical sequences to life.
Commercially, the film proved resilient. Released during the Diwali festival on 25 October 2019, it achieved a worldwide gross of approximately 296 crore, securing its place as the 7th highest-grossing Hindi film of that year. While critics offered mixed-to-negative reviews, citing the film's reliance on low-brow humor and occasional pacing issues, it found a dedicated audience. The film's marketing was equally ambitious, featuring a unique promotional campaign that released character posters spanning the 600-year gap between the two timelines, and a trailer launch that spanned multiple countries including India, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Dubai.
