In short: In 2015, IDFC First Bank launched with just 23 branches and a heavy burden of legacy infrastructure loans. Today, it has transformed into a major retail player through aggressive mergers and a strategic pivot that fundamentally reshaped its identity from industrial financing to everyday consumer banking.

The bank's origins are rooted in public service. Established in 1997 by the Indian government, IDFC Limited was originally designed to finance infrastructure projects. It only became a Public Financial Institution in 1999. By 2005, the government began divesting its stake, eventually bringing it down to 34.91% through an initial public offering. The bank itself was born in 2015 as a demerger from IDFC Limited, specifically to separate retail banking from the parent's infrastructure debt and asset management businesses.

The transition was not seamless. Early on, the bank struggled with bad loans from its legacy infrastructure accounts, even leading to a failed merger with the Shriram Group. A turning point arrived in 2018 when IDFC Bank merged with Capital First, an MSME financing company with a retail loan portfolio of ₹229.7 billion. This move allowed the bank to pivot toward retail banking. The results were significant: by June 2026, its CASA ratio (current account savings account) jumped from 8.7% to 50.8%, and retail deposits surged to 80% of total deposits, reaching ₹2,38,090 crore.

The evolution reached a climax in 2024 with a reverse merger where the bank took over its parent company, IDFC Limited. This consolidation was supported by major moves including a stake increase by the parent to 40% and investments from global players like GQG Partners and Life Insurance Corporation. While it has faced recent scrutiny over financial irregularities involving government accounts in early 2026—where it credited ₹578 crore back to state departments within 24 hours—the bank continues to expand its footprint, reaching 1,155 branches by mid-2026.
