In short: Established in 1964 to fuel India's industrial growth, IDBI Bank has undergone a radical metamorphosis. Once a government-owned development finance institution, it evolved into a commercial lender before facing a massive bailout. Today, the bank stands at the center of a major privatization effort, marking a new chapter in its history.

The Industrial Development Bank of India was founded in 1964 as a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India to provide long-term financing for industrial projects. During its formative years, it acted as a cornerstone for India's financial infrastructure, helping to establish key institutions like the National Stock Exchange and the Securities and Exchange Board of India. By 1976, the government assumed direct ownership, cementing its role as the primary coordinator for industrial development.

The landscape shifted significantly in the early 2000s as the bank transitioned toward commercial banking. This move, however, left the institution vulnerable to high levels of non-performing assets, which reached about 28 percent of its total loans by March 2018. To stabilize the bank, the Life Insurance Corporation of India intervened, acquiring a 51 percent controlling stake in January 2019. This acquisition prompted the Reserve Bank of India to reclassify the institution as a private sector bank for regulatory purposes.

The bank's evolution continues into the present. As of July 2026, the government and the Life Insurance Corporation have selected Fairfax Financial to purchase a combined 60.72 percent stake in the bank. Because Fairfax already holds a significant interest in CSB Bank, regulators have mandated a two-year grace period to resolve potential conflicts of interest. This privatization process remains subject to final executive approval and rigorous fit-and-proper certifications from financial authorities, signaling a definitive shift away from its original development-focused mandate.
