The fashion editor who used extravagant hats to keep the world at bay
In short: Isabella Blow was more than a magazine editor; she was a kingmaker. From discovering Alexander McQueen to launching Sophie Dahl, her eye shaped modern style. Yet, behind the flamboyant headpieces and high-society influence lay a life of profound personal loss, financial struggle, and a search for belonging.
Born in London in 1958, Isabella Blow's early life was marked by tragedy and upheaval. The drowning of her young brother, John, left a lasting impact, and by age 14, she witnessed her parents' separation and subsequent divorce. Despite her later prominence in the fashion industry, her path was far from glamorous; she worked as a cleaner in London and even sold apricot-studded scones in a shop.
Blow's professional legacy is defined by her extraordinary ability to spot raw talent. She famously purchased the entire graduate collection of Alexander McQueen—titled 'Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims'—for £5,000, paying him in weekly installments of £100. She also launched the careers of models Stella Tennant and Sophie Dahl, the latter of whom she famously described as 'a blow up doll with brains'.
Her personal style became inseparable from her work, particularly through her mentorship of milliner Philip Treacy. She wore his extravagant hats as a signature, claiming they served a practical purpose: to prevent strangers from kissing her. However, her later years were shadowed by the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, ovarian cancer, and the pain of being sidelined as the fashion industry moved toward corporate acquisitions, such as the Gucci purchase of McQueen's label.
The end of her life was as turbulent as her career. After a period of intense depression and multiple suicide attempts, she died in May 2007. While her death was initially attributed to cancer, a coroner later ruled it a suicide. She was honored with a funeral at Gloucester Cathedral, attended by figures ranging from Anna Wintour to members of the Royal Family.
