In short: While most pickup trucks prioritize raw utility, the Jeep Gladiator blends heavy-duty hauling with open-air exploration. It is built on the same platform as the Wrangler JL, offering unique features like removable doors and a lowered windshield, but it remains the only truck of its kind to feature a convertible folding soft top.

The Jeep Gladiator (JT) represents a revival of a storied nameplate that first appeared in 1962. While Jeep produced trucks like the Comanche until 1992, the modern Gladiator was officially introduced at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show and hit showrooms in early 2019. It shares its mechanical DNA with the Wrangler JL, including a flat rear load floor for tall cargo and a unique interior layout where the gear selector depicts a Gladiator instead of the classic Willys Jeep found in the Wrangler.

Engineering-wise, the vehicle is designed to balance off-road capability with work requirements. The front grille slots were specifically enlarged to provide increased airflow for heavier-duty engine cooling during towing or hauling. It features an approach angle of 43.6 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees. For navigation in difficult terrain, it offers 'Off Road Pages' that display real-time data on steering angles and approach/departure metrics, alongside an optional front-facing trail cam to assist with water fording or navigating over logs.

Market availability and powertrain options vary significantly by region. In Europe, the Gladiator was sold exclusively with a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine until it was withdrawn at the end of 2023. Conversely, in Australia and New Zealand, all models are sold only with the 3.6L gasoline V6 and an 8-speed automatic transmission. While Jeep initially planned to introduce a 4Xe hybrid powertrain for the 2025 model year using a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder setup, Stellantis cancelled those plans in September 2025 during a larger model realignment.

The truck's versatility is highlighted by its 'Weekend Warrior Mode,' which allows a rear folding tonneau cover to be closed while hauling 2x4-inch lumber. For heavy lifting, select Sport models can reach a towing capacity of 7,650 lb with a heavy-duty package, though diesel variants typically feature lower ratings.
