How a Shanghai Airline Pivoted from Aviation to Electric Vehicle Production
In short: Juneyao Air began as a private Chinese carrier in 2005, eventually becoming the first in its country to operate intercontinental wide-body flights. Yet, the company recently expanded beyond the skies, acquiring a startup to enter the automotive market and begin its own vehicle development and production.
Headquartered in Pudong, Shanghai, Juneyao Air was established in 2005 as a subsidiary of the Shanghai JuneYao Group. After initially considering the name Phoenix Airlines, the company launched its first commercial flight in September 2006. For years, the carrier maintained an all-Airbus fleet, but it shifted its strategy in 2016 by signing an agreement for Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The first of these wide-body aircraft arrived in October 2018, enabling the airline to launch its inaugural intercontinental service between Shanghai and Helsinki in June 2019. This milestone marked a significant achievement for a private Chinese carrier.
The airline’s growth has been marked by strategic partnerships and diversification. In 2015, it launched 9 Air, a low-cost subsidiary based in Guangzhou, and listed its stocks on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. By 2017, the carrier joined the Star Alliance as a Connecting Partner. Despite facing a financial loss of CNY 749 million in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline continued to expand its reach. As of May 2026, it connects more than 220 destinations across East Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Australia, operating over 260 distinct routes.
The most surprising turn in the company's trajectory occurred in 2023, when it entered the automotive sector by creating the JuneYao Auto branch. To facilitate this move, the airline acquired Yudo, a startup that had been struggling financially. This pivot into vehicle manufacturing represents a major departure from its core aviation business, which continues to evolve through fleet upgrades, such as the delivery of locally assembled Airbus A321neo jets in 2023 and a 2026 order for 25 additional A320-family aircraft. Today, the company balances its role as a major regional airline with its new ambitions in the electric vehicle industry.
