The rare feat of twin brothers representing the Netherlands together
In short: In the world of international football, certain milestones are so rare they become historical landmarks. Jurriën Timber recently joined an elite group of siblings who have shared the pitch for their country, marking a unique chapter in Dutch sporting history.
Jurriën Timber's rise to prominence is rooted in a structured Dutch development system. He joined the Ajax youth academy in 2014 from Feyenoord, moving with his twin brother, Quinten. By 2018, Timber had signed his first professional contract with Ajax, eventually making his senior debut in March 2020. His early years in Amsterdam were defined by rapid growth, where he secured two Eredivisie titles and won the Marco van Basten Award as the club's Talent of the Year for the 2021–22 season.
Timber's transition to the English Premier League in July 2023 saw him join Arsenal for an initial fee of £34 million. Despite a significant ACL injury in his debut month, he demonstrated remarkable resilience. He returned to the pitch in May 2024 and quickly established himself as a starting right-back. His impact was immediate; by late 2024, he was already scoring goals in both domestic and European competitions, including a notable header against Manchester United.
The most unique aspect of Timber's career involves his family lineage. Born in the Netherlands to parents from Curaçao, the Timber brothers are part of a very small group of twins to represent the Netherlands simultaneously. They follow in the footsteps of two other famous sets of twins who achieved this feat, including the van de Kerkhof and de Boer brothers. This milestone occurred in September 2024 when Jurriën and Quinten appeared together for the first time in senior international football.
Beyond the pitch, Timber's identity is shaped by a complex family history. While he bears his mother's surname, Timber, the family chose this over his father's name, Maduro. His career also reflects a deep personal faith, as he frequently shares religious messages on social media. Today, he is recognized as a premier defender, evidenced by his inclusion in the 2025–26 PFA Team of the Year and the Premier League Fan Team of the Season.
