Why the latest Jurassic World film turned to heart disease for its survival plot
In short: In Jurassic World Rebirth, dinosaurs are not just monsters—they are the key to a medical breakthrough. Faced with a world where most prehistoric species can no longer survive, a covert team hunts for DNA in a remote research facility to synthesize a life-saving treatment for human heart disease.
The 2025 film Jurassic World Rebirth, directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, marks a tonal shift for the franchise. Moving away from the global, human-integrated settings of the preceding trilogy, the story returns to the concept of humans trapped in a dinosaur-dominated environment. Koepp, who also wrote the original 1993 Jurassic Park, developed the script alongside executive producer Steven Spielberg. They sought to revive the tone of the original trilogy by focusing on the biological reality of the animals, depicting them as creatures driven by hunger or territorial defense rather than mere monsters.
The central premise hinges on a scientific observation: larger dinosaurs often exhibited remarkably low incidences of heart disease, a trait that could potentially be leveraged for human medicine. In the film, pharmaceutical executive Martin Krebs enlists a team to extract biomaterial from three specific species—the Mosasaurus, Titanosaurus, and Quetzalcoatlus—on the abandoned island of Île Saint-Hubert. This mission is complicated by the presence of a shipwrecked family and the discovery of a six-limbed, mutated predator known as the Distortus rex, a remnant of past genetic experimentation.
Production was notably rapid, with the film moving from development to a July 2025 release in roughly 18 months. To capture the aesthetic of the original films, cinematographer John Mathieson shot the project on 35mm film using vintage anamorphic lenses. While the film received mixed reviews, it grossed over $872 million worldwide. By the end of the narrative, the protagonists Zora Bennett and Dr. Henry Loomis choose to distribute the extracted biomaterial as an open-source resource, aiming to ensure global access to the cardiovascular treatment.
The film is notable for being the first in the franchise since Jurassic Park III to fall short of the $1 billion mark, yet it secured an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. It also stands as the first entry in the series to feature an entirely new cast, with no returning actors from previous installments. The production, filmed across Thailand, Malta, and the United Kingdom, reflects a deliberate effort by the creators to return to the franchise's roots while exploring the ethical implications of de-extinction.
