From academy rivalries to senior stardom: the rapid rise of Justin Ellis
In short: In 2021, Justin Ellis was an under-15 academy prospect. By late 2026, he was a scoring sensation for the United States senior team. This is the story of a striker whose versatility and clinical finishing turned a club rivalry into a professional breakthrough.
Justin Ellis's professional trajectory is defined by a swift transition from youth academy standout to senior international. Born on May 14, 2007, Ellis began his development in the Inter Miami academy, playing for their under-15 and under-17 teams between 2021 and 2022. His trajectory shifted significantly upon joining Orlando City, rivals of Inter Miami, for the rest of the 2022/23 MLS Next under-17 season, netting three goals during 14 matches.
His clinical nature became evident in 2025, a breakout year for the forward. Having secured the U-18 Generation Adidas Cup Golden Boot with six goals, Ellis earned the 2024–25 U19 MLS NEXT MVP title following an 18-goal regular season. He transitioned seamlessly to the professional level with Orlando City B, where he scored his first professional goal during his debut season in 2024. By 2025, he had become a key contributor for the senior Orlando City side, recording seven goals and five assists.
Ellis's ability to perform under pressure has earned him significant international recognition. He has represented the United States at the U18, U19, and senior levels. His senior debut came on September 26, 2026, under coach Mauricio Pochettino, where he scored a headed goal in a 4–1 victory against Peru. Described as a "complete striker," Ellis is noted for his ability to create opportunities for others and his comfort maintaining possession under defensive pressure. While he is a US citizen, he remains eligible to represent Uruguay through his mother.
