In short: Justin Longmuir’s journey from a promising forward hampered by injury to a celebrated senior coach is a study in resilience. After a playing career cut short at 26, he spent over a decade refining his craft as an assistant before returning to lead Fremantle to historic, record-breaking heights in 2026.

Born in 1981 in Koorda, Justin Longmuir was recruited by Fremantle as the number two draft pick in 1998. During his playing tenure from 1999 to 2007, he served as a forward and ruckman, tallying 139 games and 166 goals. His time on the field was defined by both his versatility and the physical toll of a chronic, degenerative knee injury, which ultimately forced his retirement at age 26 in October 2007.

Following his playing days, Longmuir transitioned into coaching, spending seven years as an assistant at the West Coast Eagles starting in 2010. He later moved to Collingwood in 2017 to serve as a defence coach. In September 2019, he returned to Fremantle as senior coach. His tenure began during the disrupted 2020 season, followed by a period of rebuilding that saw the team return to the finals in 2022 after a seven-year absence.

The 2026 season marked a significant turning point for the club under Longmuir’s leadership. Fremantle achieved a club-record 19 wins and four losses, securing the minor premiership and remaining undefeated at home. This campaign included a 14-game winning streak, the longest in the history of any major sporting club in Western Australia. Longmuir’s impact was formally recognized when he received the top coaching honor from the Australian Football League Coaches Association, becoming the first Fremantle coach to earn the distinction, alongside the JJ Leonard Coach of the Year award.
