In short: Rising near Lake Tanganyika, the Kagera River acts as the primary inflow for Lake Victoria. This vital waterway, formed by the confluence of the Nyabarongo and Ruvubu rivers, carries significant volume into the lake, shaping the geography and history of the East African nations through which it flows.

The Kagera River, also known as the Akagera or Alexandra Nile, serves as the most distant source of the Nile. It originates in Burundi near the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika. The river is formed by the confluence of two major headstreams: the Nyabarongo of Rwanda and the Ruvubu of Burundi. While it is established that the Kagera is the largest and most important tributary entering Lake Victoria, the exact determination of which feeder river is longer—and thus the ultimate source of the Nile—remains a subject of debate.

Flowing through diverse landscapes, the river traverses the Rwanda-Tanzania border, passes over the Rusumo Falls, and winds through Akagera National Park before turning east to mark the Tanzania-Uganda border. It eventually empties into the western side of Lake Victoria. The river is a critical hydrological feature, contributing approximately 6.4 billion cubic metres of water annually, which accounts for about 28 percent of the lake's total outflow. Its basin is biologically rich, hosting at least 55 fish species in the Rwandan section alone, though the presence of numerous waterfalls and rapids creates barriers that isolate different sections of the river.

Beyond its ecological significance, the Kagera has been central to regional history. It has served as a boundary for Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, and has been a site of colonial movement, including the 1894 crossing by Gustav Adolf von Götzen. Tragically, the river gained international notoriety in 1994 during the Rwandan genocide, when it was used to dispose of thousands of victims. The bodies were carried downstream into Lake Victoria, creating a severe health emergency in Uganda. Today, the river remains a defining feature of the region, lending its name to the Kagera Region of Tanzania and the national park in Rwanda.
