How a biochemistry graduate became one of Hindi cinema's most reliable character actors
In short: Before he was stealing scenes in major Bollywood productions, Brijendra Kala was studying biochemistry. From the local stages of Mathura to writing dialogues for major television productions, his journey from a small village in Uttarakhand to the heights of Indian cinema is a masterclass in versatile talent.
Brijendra Kala's path to stardom was far from linear. After being born in Sumari village, located in Pauri, Garhwal, Uttarakhand, he resided primarily in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, during his youth. While his father worked at a local veterinary hospital, Kala was developing a dual interest in science and the arts. He later obtained a BSc in biochemistry at Agra University's Kishori Raman College, a world away from his future theatrical roles. His upbringing in Uttar Pradesh shaped his early perspective. This academic background provided a unique foundation for his creative pursuits.
His theatrical foundation was laid in Mathura, where he spent years performing with local groups such as the Swastik Rang Mandal. This deep immersion in stagecraft provided the technical grounding for his transition to film. Interestingly, his expertise extends beyond acting; he has also contributed as a writer, crafting dialogues for several television shows produced by Ekta Kapoor, including the popular Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. His early stage work helped refine his craft. This versatility allowed him to transition seamlessly into professional television writing.
Kala made his official acting debut in 2003, when director Tigmanshu Dhulia cast him in a minor role as a newspaper vendor in the film Haasil. Since then, he has become a staple of Hindi cinema, known for a naturalistic style and subtle humor. Whether in mainstream hits like Jab We Met, PK, and Tubelight, or acclaimed films like Paan Singh Tomar and Ankhon Dekhi, his ability to bring depth to supporting roles has earned him a reputation as a consistent, scene-stealing presence in both film and digital web series. His filmography includes diverse titles such as Mithya and Agneepath. He continues to expand his reach through various digital projects.
