Is this ancient Iranian desert city the true birthplace of the three wise men?
In short: Kashan is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, sitting between the Karkas Mountains and the Dasht-e Kavir desert. Beyond its reputation for exquisite silk carpets and ceramics, the city is shrouded in legends, including the claim that it served as the original home of the biblical magi.
Kashan’s history stretches back to the Paleolithic era, with archaeological evidence of human presence found at sites like Neyasar and Kaftar Khoun. The nearby Tepe Sialk, linked to the Zayandeh River Culture, dates to the 6th millennium BC, marking the city as a cradle of ancient civilization. While its exact founding remains uncertain, medieval travelers like Friar Odoric of Pordenone recorded local traditions in 1330 suggesting that Kashan was the starting point for the three wise men who traveled to Bethlehem for the nativity of Jesus.
The city has endured significant upheaval, including a devastating 1778 earthquake that claimed 8,000 lives and leveled the architectural legacy of Abbas the Great. Despite such disasters, it has remained a cultural hub, serving as a leisure destination for Safavid shahs and a center for the production of renowned lustreware pottery and textiles. Today, it is known as Dar al-Mominin and maintains a vibrant academic community with over 10,000 students across various disciplines.
Geography defines much of Kashan's modern identity. Situated in the north of Isfahan province, it experiences a hot desert climate, yet its proximity to the Karkas Mountains provides a unique backdrop. Mount Gargash, reaching 3,600 meters, was selected in 2003 as the site for the Iranian National Observatory due to its favorable light conditions, with the facility finally opening in 2021. This blend of ancient lore, industrial craft, and modern scientific ambition continues to shape the city's character.
