In short: Kavach is an automatic train protection system designed to prevent collisions and signal violations. By integrating trackside RFID tags with onboard computers and radio communication, it monitors train movement in real time. If a driver fails to act, the system automatically applies brakes to ensure safety and maintain speed.

Developed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation in collaboration with domestic firms, Kavach began as the Train Collision Avoidance System in 2011. It functions as an open-architecture system, allowing for distributed deployment rather than requiring centralized infrastructure. This design choice makes it a cost-effective alternative to international systems like the European Train Control System. The technology received Safety Integrity Level-4 certification in 2019, confirming its compliance with rigorous international safety standards for railway control and protection.

The system relies on a network of stationary and onboard components. RFID tags placed on track sleepers provide precise location data, while radio units—using UHF frequencies—facilitate communication between locomotives and trackside equipment. An onboard computer processes this data, cross-referencing it with signal aspects and speed restrictions. If a train approaches a red signal or exceeds a speed limit, the Brake Interface Unit automatically triggers the braking system. The system also includes an SOS function that can stop all nearby trains in an emergency.

Recent iterations, such as Kavach 4.0, introduce advanced features like the Temporary Speed Restriction Management System and transition to LTE-R communication. Trials have demonstrated the system's effectiveness, including successful tests on Vande Bharat trains at speeds up to 160 km/h. With plans to implement the technology across 34,000 km of the Golden Quadrilateral rail route by 2027–2028, Indian Railways aims to leverage this indigenous innovation to move toward a zero-accident rate across its vast network.
