In short: Nestled in a strategic river gap within Iran's Lorestan mountains, Khorramabad has served as a vital crossroads for millennia. From its origins as a nomadic market hub to its role as a fortified capital for independent princes, this city remains a resilient center of culture and history in western Iran.

Khorramabad, the capital of Lorestan province, occupies a critical position in western Iran. Its location commands a river gap through the Lorestan mountains, historically serving as the primary transit point for travelers moving between the Khuzestan lowlands and the interior highland plateau. The region itself, known as the Land of the Lurs, is defined by rugged terrain, oak forests, and fertile valleys that have supported human habitation since at least 1000 BCE, when Indo-European peoples like the Medes first settled the area.

The city’s history is marked by waves of imperial influence and local autonomy. Following the rule of the Medes, the region saw the rise and fall of various dynasties, including the Achaemenids, Seleucids, Parthians, and Sassanids. By the 12th century, Khorramabad emerged as a seat of power for the Khorshidi dynasty, whose independent princes, known as atabegs, governed Northern Lorestan. This period of relative autonomy ended in the early 17th century when the Safavid ruler Abbas I the Great removed the final atabeg, Shah Vardi Khan, and installed a centrally appointed governor to oversee the territory.

Today, the city functions as a modern economic hub, linking regional centers like Borujerd and Aligudarz through an established network of roads and railways. The local economy relies on a diverse agricultural base, producing everything from wheat and rice to sugar beets and fruits. Beyond farming, the area supports industrial production of cement and processed foods, while mining operations extract iron ore and molybdenum. Despite these modern developments, the city retains its historical character, standing as a testament to the enduring strategic importance of the Lorestan mountain passes.
