Kerman: An Ancient Iranian Crossroads Built on Desert Sands and Volcanic Peaks
In short: Perched 5,738 feet above sea level, Kerman is a resilient city of high-altitude plains and barren hills. Once a vital trade emporium linking the Persian Gulf to Central Asia, this southeastern Iranian capital has survived centuries of sackings, shifting dynasties, and the harsh, arid climate of the Lut Desert.
Founded as a defensive outpost by Ardashīr I of the Sāsānian dynasty in the 3rd century, Kerman has served as a strategic anchor for various empires. Its history is marked by cycles of destruction and renewal. In 1794, the city suffered a brutal siege by Āghā Moḥammad Khān Qājār, who punished the populace for supporting his rival, Loṭf ʿAlī Khān. Yet, under the subsequent Qājār rule, the city was rebuilt, preserving a rich architectural legacy that includes 11th-century mosques and the historic Ark citadel.
The city’s geography is as extreme as its history. Located on a sandy plain surrounded by mountains, Kerman experiences a cool climate punctuated by frequent spring and autumn sandstorms. Water, the lifeblood of this arid region, has historically been managed through qanats—intricate underground aqueducts—that channel runoff from the surrounding hills. Nearby, the landscape shifts into the Dasht-e Lūt, a desert featuring wind-carved ridges known as kalūt, which can reach heights of up to 240 feet.
Economically, Kerman has long been a center for fine craftsmanship. While it was once famous for its intricate shawls, the city is now globally recognized as Iran’s premier carpet-exporting hub. Beyond textiles, the province is a powerhouse of natural resources, holding significant deposits of copper, coal, and uranium. It also plays a critical role in global agriculture, producing a large percentage of the world’s pistachios. Today, Kerman balances this industrial and agricultural output with a deep commitment to its cultural heritage, housing the only anthropology museum in Iran dedicated to the ancient Zoroastrian faith.
