From the Masters scoreboard to the NFL sidelines: The career of Ken Whisenhunt
In short: Ken Whisenhunt’s journey spans from operating manual scoreboards at the Masters to orchestrating Super Bowl offenses. While he achieved historic milestones as a head coach, his career was marked by significant volatility, including rapid firings and a brief, turbulent stint leading a professional football team in the United Football League.
Born in 1962, Ken Whisenhunt began his professional life as an NFL tight end, playing for the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, and New York Jets before retiring in 1993. After a year spent pursuing competitive golf, he transitioned into coaching. His rise was defined by his tenure as offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he helped secure a victory in Super Bowl XL. His strategic influence was evident in the game's famous wide receiver reverse pass, which remains a notable moment in championship history.
Whisenhunt’s head coaching career with the Arizona Cardinals reached a zenith in 2008 when he guided the team to their first Super Bowl appearance. This era included the franchise's first home playoff game in 60 years and back-to-back division titles. However, the departure of quarterback Kurt Warner signaled a decline. Following three non-winning seasons, he was fired in 2012. His subsequent tenure with the Tennessee Titans was equally difficult, resulting in a 3–20 record over less than two seasons before his dismissal in 2015.
The later stages of his career involved various roles, including offensive coordinator for the Chargers and analyst positions at Penn State and Alabama. In 2024, he took the helm of the Memphis Showboats in the United Football League, though his time there was brief and characterized by a resignation, a return, and a final departure in April 2025. Today, he contributes to high school football in Nashville, reflecting a career defined by both high-stakes professional success and persistent instability.
