In short: Khorasan, a name meaning where the sun arrives from, was once Iran's largest province. Defined by deep historical roots and vast geographical reach, this region was formally divided in 2004. Today, its legacy persists across modern borders, encompassing a complex tapestry of cultures, languages, and significant historical urban centers.

The term Khorasan, or land of the rising sun, originated during the Sasanian Empire as a designation for Persia's eastern province. Historically, this region was far more expansive than the modern Iranian administrative entity, covering a vast territory that today spans parts of Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Throughout the Late Middle Ages, particularly during the post-Mongol Timurid and Chagatai periods, the name served to distinguish the region from the neighboring area of Transoxiana.

Within Iran, the province of Khorasan functioned as a singular, massive administrative unit until its formal dissolution in September 2004. Its modern boundaries had been established in the late nineteenth century. Upon its division, the territory was partitioned into three distinct provinces: North Khorasan, centered in Bojnourd; South Khorasan, centered in Birjand; and Razavi Khorasan, centered in the major city of Mashhad. Some southern portions were also transferred to the Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The region has long been a crossroads of civilization, home to legendary cities like Nishapur, Tus, Merv, Samarkand, and Herat. Demographically, it remains a diverse landscape primarily composed of Persians, alongside minorities including Khorasani Kurds, Turkmens, and Khorasani Turkic peoples. While the population is predominantly Shia Muslim, a significant Sunni minority also resides there. The region's history is also marked by seismic volatility; major earthquakes in 1968, 1978, and 1997 caused immense loss of life and displacement, underscoring the physical challenges of this storied land.
