In short: Deep in the mountains of Mindanao lies Lake Lanao, an ancient basin formed by volcanic collapse. While it holds immense cultural significance for the Maranao people and powers much of the island, the lake is currently suffering from a catastrophic loss of its unique, endemic fish species.

Lake Lanao, the second-largest lake in the Philippines, is a geological marvel. Spanning 340 square kilometers, it was created by the tectonic-volcanic damming of a basin and the collapse of a massive volcano. Its waters reach depths of 122 meters, fed by four rivers and drained solely by the Agus River. For the Maranao people, who take their name from the lake, the site is central to their identity and heritage, featuring prominently in local mythology regarding the divine removal of the ancient sultanate of Mantapoli.

The lake's modern history is defined by its role as a hydroelectric powerhouse. Since 1950, the National Power Corporation has utilized the lake's 700-meter elevation to generate 70% of Mindanao's electricity. The construction of the Agus I plant, which effectively turned the lake into a reservoir, sparked intense local resistance in the early 1990s. The Save Lake Lanao Movement (SALAM) argued that these engineering projects caused unnatural fluctuations in water levels, threatening the ecosystem and the livelihoods of those living along the shoreline.

The ecological toll has been severe. Lake Lanao was once home to 18 endemic or near-endemic cyprinid fish species, which likely evolved over 10,000 to 20,000 years. Today, that biodiversity has largely vanished. By 2020, 15 of these species were considered extinct, with others listed as possibly extinct. Researchers point to a combination of overfishing, pollution, and the introduction of invasive species—specifically the sleeper goby, which dominated fish landings in 2008—as the primary drivers of this collapse. Despite ongoing environmental protection efforts, the lake remains a site of tension between industrial necessity and the urgent need for ecological preservation.
